As in other states, it would be nice to have more than one to choose from. Good ol' Nebraska. Last but not least.....Boring and for what we pay we should be allowed more choices!

Does anyone know why the nebraska.gov has to be on the license plates? Do we have to look like HICKS with that on our cars when we drive out of state? The government already gets enough of MY income without MY having to advertise their website for them on MY car!

And I even like the phrase...we'd love your company...it implies growth and may attract some industry and business to our state.

Some of these are terrific! Thanks for everyone who submitted ideas, and thanks, Journal Star, for asking for ideas and posting them. I laughed the most at the sower with a wrench on the windmill. My favorites are the yellow outline state on the blue background with the state seal, the mammoth design, and the sandhill crane design, and the design with the canoe, the deer, the pheasant, etc. All 4 are better than the DMV offered designs. Maybe we'll see some of these options in 6 years!

Nebraskan's should be embarrassed by the design that was chosen. Any of these are better than the plate that will soon be on your vehicles. By the way, is it necessary to have "Nebraska" twice on your license plate? I think that Missy Day's design is the best. By the way, I am a native and have a great deal of pride in saying I'm from Nebraska

Look at states like California, Texas, New York, Iowa and may other that have kept the same design and don't seem to have any problems keeping track of people with unlicensed vehicles and their population is a lot higher than ours.

Wow I thought cliques ended in High School. Since when is another state going to ridicule us for the design on our license plate? I can't think of another state's license plate design at all! Apparently when I go traveling I pay attention to the road and not everyone's plates. The first four are just fine. Oh and FYI the governor picked one himself! So for him to go for one of these is probably not going to happen! Have any of you thought of the cost involved in making plates. Yes there is the technology but these don't come on a piece of paper now do they?! And do you really have that much time on your hands to be upset about a plate design? Pathetic!

Egads! With all of the nasty slams about these designs, I wasn't aware that there were so many unemployed art majors in Nebraska! :^) Yes, some of them are too busy for a license plate, e.g. Louise Baker's Meadowlark, pretty, but too busy. Some are simple, e.g. Gary Lawson's corn and Kerri Williams' Arbor Day. However, some of the slams that have been posted here are just plain childish. To all of the unemployed art majors, RELAX. There must be a fan club of friends sending in kudos for Missy Day, Gerry Lawon and Sarah Reed's plate designs. Missy Day's design is pretty but we've done similar and poor choice of fonts used for Nebraska and the numbers. Gerry Lawson's is boring and once the design is on the vehicle, you will not be able to see the corn in the upper right corner. The plate I dislike the most is Sarah Reed's. Even though it's the most readable, it's just plain boring. Personally, even though I'm not a fan of bison, they do represent our historic landscape. The plates designed by Cynthia Schneider are by far the most readable and composed. Love the fonts used on hers and they're not too busy. Actually I like all four of hers . . . two with bison, one with deer and love the plane! Very clever but simple.

I like a lot of the really colorful ones but I am sure there are some restrictions on the number of colors that can be used- more colors to print means more $. I like the (Platte) river one by Stannon Cords- you can do that with 2 ink colors, it is representative of the state without being corny or cliche, and it would be acceptable to a lot of people without being totally unacceptable to some (e.g.: the Bo plate). I am at a loss to understand why it must say nebraska.gov., however. Don't all state governments have a (statename).gov for a web address? I think the rest of the country probably believes by now that we have internet access- we don't have to prove it to anyone.

As designer of the Arbor Day Plate-I have to put out a word to those who are talking about the "simplicty" of the plates. I completely, completely agree with you. When I submitted my design to the Journal Star, I let them know that mine is more of a graphic, bold plate. Of course some people wouldn't want a red license plate-I know it wouldn't look great on a few cars I know! And duh, the main reason for a license plate is to read the numbers...I know that. I simply designed "Arbor Day" for fun and I appreciate all of you who have commented on it...Thanks!

Colorado media/people would have a field day casting scorn on the state. 3. The best of all of the plates is far and away one of the plates in the original four -- the Meadowlark perched on the Goldenrod. Simple, meaningful, creative.

I agree that some of these designs are great and much better than the four we have to choose from. However, many of them are impractical because they have something in the center that divides the digits to three on one side, and three on the other. That would work in Lincoln and Omaha, but the rest of the state still has a one or two digit county number then four or five characters following. So, having them three and three obviously won't work.

What we fail to remember is the reason we have plates in the first place: identification. A simple and legible design is much better for that purpose than letters and numbers on top of Bo Pelini or the state bird. And I seriously doubt that many people decide their travel plans based on a relatively tiny billboard affixed to a car bumper. Please give us all a generic plate - black with white or yellow text - but then let those who really want birds, plants, landmarks, websites, buildings, trees, animals, sports figures, etc. pay extra for it. The technology surely exists now to make that happen at a reasonable cost. This will keep the costs down for those of us who don't really care about the plate and generate some income to deal with stuff like, oh, education, health care, the environment...

The plate in Navy and Gold with the State Capital (designed by Louise Baker) is dignified, clean and easily identified. Why do we need new plates? Many states get along for years with the same plates. This is just a ploy for getting more money for the state, and more out of our pockets - which are shallow anyway. Also, what is wrong with "Beef State". That is a term most of the other states know about us. We travel so know what people think around the country, and to them "Cornhusker State" means only football - and a losing team at that for the past few years, until last year. Then the attitude changed somewhat.

These look a lot better. I however don't like the one with buffalo's on it. The art is find but I don't think any self respecting nebraskan would enjoy having a buffalo on their vehicle.

Wow!! there are some really outstanding ones. I agree with you wj, there are much better selections than submitted here than the 4 official choices. I wish they would re-think their current selection of plates which are pretty boring.

I just looked at the other plates, and I think that as always Nebraska missed the boat on the 4 plates. After looking at the plates that were not picked. It seem that Nebraska must like staying the plain state. Why not do like Missouri does, they all don't have the same plate.Like I said there is alot of better plates that did not make the cut.

I can't believe the amount of reaction to an item that shows the vehicle is properly licened and registered. Remember the year it was plain white with black letters, no one reacted about that. If my memory is correct it was about the cost. Now it seems we want a graphic to show WHAT. I for one would not think about what design is on the plate as long as it is not "BO Pelni".

I wouldn't mind half a dozen of these, but it looks like not everyone paid attention to physical plate size.

NO: Barns, Capitol building (every state has one, I'm not visiting or investing in Kentucky because they have a capitol building), Covered Wagons, Windmills, Football, Grassy Flatlands, Point Pile of Brown, Designs from nice ladies that should stick to crocheting. YES: Class,Trees, Birds. My pick: Orange on Black design. It's classy, distinctive. Just dump the Capitol.

Ahh, much better. My utmost favorite is Kerri Williams' red plate with the Arbor Day theme - just what I'd wished for! I also was impressed by Missy Day's scenic beauty. Some otherwise sharp-looking plates I disqualified because of a logo or design dead center, between the numbers. Because all counties except Lancaster and Douglas use county numbers with a space before the rest of the letters, a centrally located piece of artwork would not be feasible. Thanks to all the artists who rose to the occasion. I'd like to see the winner obtain some 'stimulus' for his/her efforts.

The more beautiful the better, but one of the main purposes of a license plate is to provide identification that can be seen from a distance and not primarily as art work. If the numbers cannot be identified, as in the Nebraska football example, then they are not appropriate for a license plate. The one with the canoe and deer is my favorite.

Somewhere between 'Pioneers on the Information Highway' and a field full of deer is the ideal plate. Why not something with the wind turbine and the (excellent) corn plate ('NHT-264')

As cliche as the corn may seem at times, I really like how the designer of the 'corn plate' was able to make the outline of the eastern edge of the state out of corn. As a hunter, I can't help but express my heavy bias toward the plate with the deer/pheasant/geese/canoeists...maybe there should be an NGPC plate, where motorists pay a little extra (like Husker plates) and the proceeds go to the NGPC. All in all...some pretty neat designs that, with a little professional polish, would really be awesome.

It's pretty amazing that none of the plates say "In God We Trust". What's up with that? I think that should be added into the final plate design.

Most of the plates would be difficult to read by law enforcement...ask any of them for their opinion. Most of them have more than 4 colors and would cost quite a bit more to produce. Would the complaining taxpayers be willing to spend more for colors?? Most of them (compared to other states) are too "busy" for a plate. Everyone is an expert...

Well...I must say that a number of these are certainly worthy of consideration. The state appears to have taken very little, if any, time consulting with ANYONE about the designs that they proposed. It seems that they gave their staff about an hour to come up with a design. Personally, I think that they should have taken it to the PEOPLE that will be USING these and see what they could come up with. CLEARLY with what is presented here there are MANY good people out there that came up with some FANTASTIC ideas!!!! Now folks need to lobby their senators to get those crummy plates off and get some decent ones up there for folks to choose from!!!!
